When I tell people I’m a blogger, I am often asked: “how to bloggers get paid?”
It’s a question than many people are interested in because people often can’t comprehend how you can earn money from doing something you love.
“There must be a catch” is a phrase I hear often.
Of course, like any job, it’s not all fun and games. Bloggers get paid in a number of ways and I would argue each income stream involves some serious work. Although blogging is a fun hobby, writing for fun doesn’t pay the bills (and don’t believe anyone who tells you it does).
How Do Bloggers Get Paid?
Usually bloggers will earn most of their money by advertising products or services. This can be done by writing dedicated posts, sharing product reviews, talking about them on social media, or a combination of all of those things.
But how do they get the work?

Established Bloggers Get Paid for Campaigns
Campaigns tend to be what most beginners are aiming for when they set up a blog. These can be big or small scale, depending on the company you’re working with. Large campaigns that are designed to push a product might involve a lot of work, so will usually pay the best.
For example, you might be required to write a blog post (or more than one) and share it on all of your social media channels. This is a pretty standard collaboration to get the word out. Otherwise, you might have agreed to a certain number or advertorial Tweets or Instagram stories and grid posts. The more work required, the more you should charge for your time and effort.
Campaigns usually come to you because that brand is hoping to work with you specifically. The best way to attract campaigns is to keep plugging away at your site and social media. Grow your audience and foster trust. Brands don’t want to waste their money on influencers who don’t have an engaged audience that pays attention. A good way to do this is to only promote things that you genuinely believe in. Be selective with the jobs you take.
Sponsored Posts are a Common Earner
Sponsored posts are another way bloggers can earn, and do tend to keep the community afloat. These can come in more than one form, but often they involve selling links. Link selling is not illegal, but it’s frowned upon by Google and can harm your blog in the long-run but it’s your choice whether you do it.
Basically, all sites have a worth in Googles eyes, and if one site has more links pointing to it than its competitors, then Google might rank it higher up in the search results. Businesses that show up higher on Google are more likely to get clients and therefore earn more. This is why link selling is such a big business (if not a slightly shady one).
Content Writing
Instead of only writing for your own site, you could look for content writing jobs for other sites too. Agencies like Content Conga write content for other websites. Check on LinkedIn for opportunities in this area and use your own blog as a portfolio.
Affiliate Earnings
Affiliate links are special links that track sales and reward the person that shared them. Most sites will share some affiliate links, even big news outlets and most big businesses have an affiliate programme. Buying through affiliate links doesn’t cost the buyer any more, but it can earn the person who shared the link a small percentage of the sale amount. This often how bloggers who do lots of reviews earn their money. If they’re recommending a product, it’s only fair they can earn from this (providing the recommendation is genuine).

As a blogger myself, I’ve come across a few places that regularly pay bloggers. This list includes my referral links to the places that pay. They are great places to start earning if you’re not used to doing paid work.
Get Blogged: This agency allows you to apply for jobs based on DA,. The price they’re willing to pay for the work you need to do is given before you apply so everything is up front. They have jobs available for site with a DA of 5 upwards, so there should be something for everyone – even those just starting out! The deal is, you write the content to their specification and they approve it once it’s done. Just wait for them to choose you if you apply!
Valued Voice: These guys provide content for you to copy and paste onto your site. It’s an American agency so they work in dollars and you set your expected price. The only thing with that is, people can offer you less than you would prefer (but you can decline – you don’t have to take it if it’s not high enough).
Guest Bloggers Wanted: I’ve not had much luck with these guys, they only have a small number of opportunities and people have to bid for them. I’ve only been chosen once, but that might be to do with having a minimum amount I’ll work for.
Blogfoster: This is another site where you have to apply for opportunities you are suitable for. I think the site is German with an English branch, but I sometimes get opportunities offered in German that I don’t understand!
