Summer is starting to fade. I know it’s not what anyone wants to hear, but the heatwaves seem to have retracted and the nights are getting longer and colder. Thankfully, summer isn’t over yet, and there’s still plenty of time to enjoy it before the leaves turn brown and the snow falls.
One of my favourite things about summer is the fashion. Everyone’s wardrobe gets a huge makeover and even the most conservative dressers start showing some skin. You can’t help but feel relaxed in summer clothes. Winter clothes are designed to hide you away, but summer clothes just show you off.
Summer clothes can be a little out of some people’s comfort zones, so I thought I’d put together this style guide to help you. That way, you can take inspiration, without feeling like you’ve had a style thrust upon you.
Black is still in
While summer does encourage colour, there’s still a place for black clothes. Classics like black dresses will never not be in fashion – no season can change that. The best thing to do if you love black but are keen to inject a little colour is to start small. If you’re trousers are black, where a colourful top or take a colourful bag.

In the picture above, you can see how a little colour has been added. A lilac top paired with black trousers is a great way to wear black in the summer. It’s not too overpowering and it makes the whole outfit look light and fun – as summer outfits should be!
Add colour to your wardrobe
Summer really is a time for colour, so add it to your wardrobe wherever possible. I mentioned above about wearing just a flash of colour if you normally dress all in black. If you’re feeling like you want to fully embrace the colourful nature of summer, then why not go for a brightly coloured co-ord? I love this tie-dye lilac one!

I can’t get enough of co-ords, to me they feel like the superior outfit of the summer. If it were down to me, everything would come as matching tops and bottoms. It really takes the thinking work out of putting an outfit together. The great thing is, you’re not limited to just wearing it as a set, either.
You could wear the co-ord top with whatever you like – denim shorts for example. Then another day you can switch it up and wear the bottoms with a different top.
Dresses are a necessity
You can’t have a summer wardrobe without at least one dress in it. Personally, I prefer several. The summer screams for dress. Floaty dresses, fitted dresses, mini dresses, midi dresses. You should have a dress for every occasion, and almost any dress can be a summer dress.
White dresses tend to by synonymous with summer, but any colour really can work. For example, this grey dress with a roll neck in the picture below. It looks like the perfect dress to wear in the autumn will tights and boots, but by just pairing with bare legs and some accessories, it doesn’t look out of place in the summer at all!

Despite the high neckline, the other features of the dress still make it appear summery. I particularly like the lace up feature at the front. The dress is already quite short, but on a different body shape, it might sit a little lower and longer. The bow could then be tightened to lift the hem a small amount. You could also add a chain belt to create a bit of sparkly bling for that summery look.
Skirts and playsuits create a fun look
If you don’t take yourself too seriously and you want your fashion to look fun, fill your wardrobe with skirts and playsuits. They give your look a young edge and can create a really unique style. If you want to stand out, look for bold patterned playsuits.
Consider the cut of your playsuit or skirt too. Flippy styles of both create a more fun look, while a more tailored, fitted style will give a more serious finish. Brightly coloured clothes can also be worn together. Pair with bright and bold accessories for a very summery vibe!
