Transition Your Wardrobe into Autumn Style

AD

The sun has been beaming down all summer, and now the nights are starting to draw in. While the sun might be out for a little longer and warmth may linger right into October, there’s no denying autumn is coming. It’s time to transition your wardrobe into autumn style.

If you’re like me, you won’t feel quite ready to say goodbye to your summer wardrobe yet. That’s exactly why you should only invest in a few new pieces and work with what you’ve got. It saves your wallet and your wardrobe! I love to get plenty of wear out of my clothes, so the only way to do that is to get inventive.

Don’t get cold

The most important thing about dressing for the change of season is not to sacrifice a comfortable temperature. You wouldn’t wear a big jumper in the summer, so why sit shivering in something skimpy in the winter? It’s not that the skimpy thing isn’t suitable for winter wear, it’s just not designed to be worn on its own in colder weather.

Layers are always your friend. A mini dress can benefit from tights, a light top might need a jacket. Your money is best spent on layering up. If your summer wardrobe is already full of complete outfits, all you really need to do is add to them.

Nothing is impossible

Your transitional wardrobe needs a positive mindset. No outfit is impossible to upgrade, just use your imagination. Even things like white dresses, which are traditionally thought to be summer clothes can be autumnal with a little bit of flare. Pair with thick, woolly tights, and a chunky scarf. If the dress is strappy, layer up. Either add a top underneath or an oversized shirt on top, and then you’ve got your look!

A hoody is your friend

Hoodies are essential autumn wear. They look great, they keep you warm and they’re so comfortable. The best thing is they come in so many styles: baggy, oversized, cropped, fitted, drawstring – anything you can imagine! They look cute paired with denim shorts and tights as the weather turns cold and make for great loungewear when worn with matching bottoms.

The clothes are so versatile you can wear them anywhere – the school run, the airport, shopping, relaxing. A hoody is there for you no matter what!

body suits are a great way to transition your wardrobe into autumn style

Body suits are so versatile. The obvious choice is to wear them with jeans or a skirt with knee high boots, but my preference is to wear under black dresses. A body suit under a black dress tends to change the season for you. You can start off with the most summery black dress you can think of, but if you stick a body suit under it and wear with thick, black tights, you’d think that dress had always been destined for autumn.

Accessorise

Aside from clothing, accessories can take a summer outfit and put an autumnal spin on it. Boots are a favourite for really emphasising you’ve dressed for the cold. Equally hats and scarves really emphasize the point that the season has changed. Matching hats and scarves are cute, but deliberately un-matching ones are a little edgier and can help your outfit look more considered.

Put away what you won’t wear

Some summer clothes will be difficult to transition, and if you’re stuck for how to do it, it’s probably a good idea to give up. Pack you undeniably summery clothes away for the winter to make room for your new layers and accessories.

Having a seasonal clear out it a good way of keeping your wardrobe tidy and your outfit ideas fresh. I like to wear clothes for more than one season, so I always put them away and bring them back out when the weather changes. Then I assess each item of clothing before it re-joins my wardrobe. If I’ve gone off it since I’ve not been wearing it, I pass it on to charity. This means I don’t hoard too many clothes and I always have space to update my collection.

I find having a rotation of clothes is the best way to plan outfits, save money and keep space in my wardrobe for new pieces I couldn’t help but buy!
