The end of 2021 is just around the corner and that means we can start dreaming about all the travel we’ll be doing in 2022. No plans yet? Then you might want to get inspired by the latest travel trends.
We’ve searched various travel agency websites for travel trends for 2022. What do we find? Like last year, sustainable travel will remain very popular in 2022 (and rightly so!). Train travel, bike travel, hiking travel… There is plenty of inspiration to plan an eco holiday. But besides eco-friendly travel, a number of other trends are expected in the world of travel. An overview!
Taking a holiday once in a lifetime
In the last two years, we were forced to cut back on our holiday plans. Now that we are allowed to travel without limits again, we realise that it really is now or never to take that dream trip. According to the Spanish tourism agency Amadeus, many more special holidays will be booked in 2022. For example, the number of searches for Tanzania, where you can see the Big Five in the wild, has increased by 36% in recent months. Bookings for the Peruvian cities of Lima and Cusco, near Machu Pichu, even increased by almost 50%. So the message is clear: next year, you absolutely must get to number one on your bucket list. If you are going to go to a once-in-a-lifetime destination, why not look up the cost to charter a private jet to see if you can make it extra special? If you are used to flying first class, and know what to look for when it comes to private jets, you may not find there is much difference between what you would normally pay for a commercial flight.

Friendcations
And there’s something else the pandemic has taught us: laughter and memories with the people you love are worth their weight in gold. The last few years would have been infinitely more difficult without Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime and WhatsApp. These apps have made us realise how valuable friends and family are and how important it is to stay in touch face to face. So it’s no surprise that 2022 will be the year of the big reunions, and where better to do that than abroad, right? In the UK, travel agents saw an increase in demand for large group travel or – wait for it – 600% (!!). Amadeus is also seeing significant interest in group travel: Searches for popular destinations for such trips have doubled in recent months and trips to party destinations such as Ibiza and Las Vegas are currently in high demand.
Finding locations
Another thing we’ve been doing a bit more than usual in the last two years is watching series and movies. And that can make you envious of actors who get to work in the most stunning locations. These series and movies are often full of holiday inspiration, and according to several trend watchers, we will be using this inspiration to plan our trips next year. Incidentally, Netlfix recently published a study showing that Porthgwarra in Cornwall will receive 50% more tourists by 2020 due to the success of the series “Poldark”. We want to go to Wye Valley!
Wellness Travel
According to Booking.com, when we go on holiday, we are particularly drawn to tranquil journeys and mindful moments. One of their surveys shows that 79% of all travellers confirm that travel is the best medicine for their mental and emotional wellbeing. So in 2022, we won’t be travelling because we want to see Rome, Paris or Barcelona, but because we need time off for our mental health. To increase the mental health even more, think about a hiking holiday. You might think that this is exhausting, but it is actually very relaxing and enjoyable. Have a look at the Dolomites Italy hiking or find out more about the GR20 stages!

Local experiences
Because we want to travel more consciously in the future, many tourists also find it important to connect with local people and have local experiences. A study by Booking.com has shown that more than half of all travellers think it is important that their holiday has a positive impact on the local community. More than 70% of all travellers say they only want to have experiences that are representative of the local culture.
Cinematic road trips
TikTok has not only influenced our beauty routines and evening meals, but now our travels. Pinterest predicts that vlog-worthy road trips will be more popular than ever next year, precisely because these images can then be shared on TikTok. So treat us to a quiet road trip without a smartphone.
