The Essential Guide to Skin Care in Humid Climates

Humidity: while it can be a blessing for some, it’s a real challenge for others, especially when it comes to skincare. Having lived in both dry and humid climates, I can attest that each has its unique set of skincare hurdles. But when humidity strikes, our skin can feel oily, look greasy, and becomes more prone to breakouts. So, let’s embark on this journey together to explore the essential guide to skincare in those oh-so-sticky climates.

Know Your Products: Humidity-Friendly Brands

When dealing with humidity, the products you choose can make a world of difference. I’ve spent countless hours (and dollars!) on trial and error before finding what really works. One of my top recommendations for humid climate skincare is Dermalogica. Their products are designed to be lightweight and effective, ensuring your skin remains fresh and breathable, even when the air around you feels heavy.

Cleansing: Keep It Gentle

Double Cleansing is Your Friend

To combat the sweat and grime that can build up on your face in humid conditions, consider the double cleansing method. Start with an oil-based cleanser to break down oil-based debris like sunscreen and sebum, followed by a water-based cleanser to clean away sweat and dirt.

I stand by double cleansing in all climates, but especially in a humid one. The double cleanse really is the only way to get those pores cleaned deep down without leaving any tiny particles of makeup, sebum, or sweat etc.

Avoid Over-Stripping

While it’s tempting to reach for strong foaming cleansers to combat the greasiness, these can strip your skin of essential oils. Instead, go for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that maintains your skin’s natural barrier.

If you over-strip your skin when washing it, it can lead to dry, uncomfortable skin. It can also trigger excess oil production, as some people’s skin will try to quickly compensate the lack of oil and overshoot it.

You can also harm your skin’s natural barrier and start to see dry patches and breakout. These skin conditions in a humid climate can be uncomfortable, as the moisture in the air and the sweat your skin produces can sting and leave you with a sore face.

Moisturize Wisely: Hydration without Heaviness

Opt for Gel-based Formulas

Gel-based moisturizers are lightweight, absorb quickly, and provide ample hydration without the weight of cream-based products. Anything heavy can just sit on top of the skin and be a breeding ground for bacteria once you start to sweat. It can also make your makeup slide off in hot conditions

Hydration is Still Key

It’s a common misconception that you don’t need to moisturize in humid climates. The reality? Humidity can still dehydrate your skin, making moisturizers essential. Just opt for lighter formulations.

The skincare you’re looking at should describe the texture on the bottle. If not, give it a quick Google and you’re bound to find a review written by a beauty blogger who talks about the texture.

Some skincare ranges will specify if the the product is hydrating or moisturizing. Products aimed at hydration tend to be lightweight and quickly absorbed, while products that are listed at moisturizing tend to be thicker and more oil based. A lot of K-beauty style products have become popular in recent years, which has flooded the market with moisturizers called “water creams”. These water creams are my favourite type of light moisturizer and if you’re looking for a recommendation, I recommend this one by The Inkey List.

Sun Protection: Non-Negotiable!

Go for Light Sunscreens

In high humidity, a heavy sunscreen can feel like an added layer of sweat. Light, mattifying sunscreens can offer protection without adding to the greasiness.

There are two types of sunscreen out there – physical SPF and chemical SPF. Physical SPF tends to have zinc in the formula which is something that physically blocks UV rays from touching your skin.

Chemical SPFs have chemical ingredients that absorb the UV and turn it into heat energy. It’s up to you what you go for, but physical SPFs tend to have a white cast, which can be hard to rub in and be visible under makeup. It might be best to try one of each and see which you prefer.

Reapply Regularly

With sweat and frequent face-wiping, your sunscreen can wear off quicker than you think. Make sure you reapply, especially if you’re spending extended periods outdoors.

Even if you’re wearing makeup (including makeup with SPF) your need to reapply sunscreen every few hours. There are mousse and powder sunscreens available that are specifically designed to be reapplied over makeup throughout the day.

Makeup Tips: Longevity in the Limelight

Primer is a Must

To keep your makeup from sliding off your face in the humidity, start with a mattifying primer. This can create a smooth base and improve makeup longevity. Primer is at its best when you’ve properly prepped your skin.

Wash your face in a gentle cleanser and then use a microfoliant, which will gentle exfoliate your face. Next you should add a hydrating serum like hyaluronic acid, followed by a light moisturizer. Give that layered-up skincare change to be absorbed a little before applying makeup.

Setting Sprays

A good setting spray can lock in your makeup, ensuring it stays put throughout the day. I like to use a mixing palette and spray setting spray into my foundation and mix it in before I apply it. For extra insurance that your makeup will stay put, you could set with loose setting powder too.

Combatting Breakouts: Stay Clear

Exfoliate, but Not Too Much

With increased oil production and sweat, your skin can be more prone to clogging. Regular exfoliation can help prevent breakouts. Just ensure you don’t overdo it, as too much exfoliation can irritate the skin. I like using this daily microfoliant from Dermalogica as it’s not too harsh. It’s designed to be used every day and I’d say when dealing with humid climates, you really should be exfoliating regularly.

Spot Treatments

Having a good spot treatment on hand can be a lifesaver when sudden breakouts occur. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil.

Embrace the Humidity

While skincare in humid climates might feel like an uphill battle, with the right products and strategies, you can ensure your skin remains clear, radiant, and healthy. Remember, it’s all about finding the balance that works best for you. Humidity might bring its challenges, but it also bestows that dewy, fresh glow we all love. So, with these tips in hand, I say, let’s embrace the humidity and let our skin shine!
