Free ways to have fun seem quite few and far between these days. Everyone seems to be trying to pull back the spending as costs rise, but equally, there seems to be fewer free activities than there were a few years ago.
I’ve compiled a list of my go-to ways to have summer fun without having to spend a penny.
5 Free Ways to Entertain Yourself This Summer
Below are my five fave ways to enjoy yourself for free this summer. If you like this list, you might also enjoy reading about these slow living hobbies too.
Free Online Games

If you love gaming but don’t have to cash to keep up with all the latest released, then don’t worry. You can still enjoy online games for free! There are tonnes of free online games at your fingertips, all you have to do is pick which ones suit you best. Will you be a real estate tycoon or run a supermarket? Is a farm simulator more your thing, or do you like to play about with imaginary stocks and shares.
If I’m honest, all of the above applies to me. I like to mix up genres and I like to try things I’ve never tried before. I’ve found these free money games to all be a hoot and I’ve even discovered that I love games I’ve never even heard of before!
Join the Library

I know it seems like advice your nanna might give you, but joining your local library can be a great source of entertainment.
There certainly aren’t as many library-goers as there used to be. I think the speed that technology improved probably harmed the library scene, but a library is still worth a visit.
Most libraries have funding to get the latest best-sellers, and with fewer people attending the library, you’ll have less competition when it comes to taking out the popular books.
Another thing libraries are good for is putting on free clubs or events. You’ll sometimes find a creative writing or a computer learning club on at your library, which can be incredibly useful.
Just remember to take your book back in time, because it’s not so free when you get a late fee!
Attend Free Events

Free events are heaps of fun and a fab way to spend the day. Most events local to you will advertise online on sites like Nexdoor and Facebook, and put posters up in the local shops and on lamp posts.
Even small communities tend to put something on, so if you’re new to an area, don’t just assume there’s not a lot to do. Get chatting to your neighbours and the people serving in your local shops to get a feel of what’s to come.
Stream Free TV Shows & Films

Most streaming services charge, but if you don’t mind the odd advert, there are plenty of free streaming apps.
My preference is Freevee on Amazon Fire TV, the Channel 4 app and the ITV app. These all seem to have reality shows, soaps, drama and even films! I never mind the ads either, they’re not too intrusive and besides, I’d rather had ads than pay a premium to skip them.
Look for Free Hobbies on Facebook

This is a cheeky one, but there are often free and swap groups on Facebook for your local area. To find them it’s an idea to type either “buy nothing”, “free” or “freebies” and your local town, city or village to bring them up.
These places do often have a lot of strange an useless things to give away, but people will often get rid of kits for abandoned hobbies. I’ve seen cross stitch, knitting and crochet stuff on my local site. There’s always lots of furniture too, which although technically upcycling isn’t free, if you’ve already got the stuff to work with getting free furniture to work on kind of makes it free.
