Art installations that utilise light are becoming more popular as a creative medium. And as you can imagine, they’re hard to miss.
Light art has a long and varied history, and the world has seen some beautiful pieces that wow audiences and spark imaginations.
Here are just six installations from around the globe that use light in exciting and innovative ways.
Field of Light
With Uluru as a backdrop, Bruce Munro’s Field of Light features 50,000 solar powered glass spheres, emerging from the earth like flowers to light up as the desert grows dark.
You’ll be able to walk among this garden of light in Uluru National Park, as the magnificent rock becomes a stunning silhouette.
Infinity Mirror Rooms
A hall of mirrors like you’ve never seen it before, Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room features wall to ceiling mirrors, with visitors exploring the beautiful LED lights that hang from the ceiling.
These lights reflect endlessly in the mirrored surfaces to create a unique and hypnotic experience.
The Avenues
Developed by Mike Sloane Lighting, with the help of Ormiston Wire, this installation at The Avenues shopping centre in Kuwait creates a beautiful atrium for the mall.
These small LED spheres are suspended from the building’s steel structure, turning a dull space into something magical and inviting.
Urban Light
What has now become one of Los Angeles most popular art installations began when artist Chris Burden found vintage streetlamps being sold at a flea market.
This inspired him to create the Urban Light installation. Comprised of over two hundred vintage streetlamps from the 1920s and 1930s – their light source having been changed to LED due to environmental concerns – the display is switched on every day at dusk, and then off again at dawn.
The Infinite Crystal Universe
International art collective teamLab have created numerous ground-breaking installations using digital art. But their work, The Infinite Crystal Universe, is pointillism as you’ve never seen it before.
Rather than tiny dots of colour, this work is made up of miniscule LED lights and is altered by mass and movement – meaning that every visit is as unique as its visitors.
Gardens by the Bay’s Supertrees
This iconic landmark in Singapore’s Marina Bay is a superb combination of engineering, nature and light, in the form of eighteen spectacular tree sculptures that support a variety of living plant life.
In the evenings these gardens come alive with a light and music show that will mesmerise any visitor who ventures into this fantastic attraction. Just as plants utilise photosynthesis, these magnificent, living sculptures harness solar energy to power themselves – making this installation quite literally the greenest around.
